Thumbtack or your own website: who keeps the customer?

Thumbtack is free to join and lets you set your own lead price. You still pay for every lead, including the ones you don’t win.

Who else gets the call

One homeowner. How many contractors?

On Thumbtack

A homeowner asks for a quote

  • Youpay for the lead

  • Another propays too
  • Another propays too

The same request can go to up to 4 pros in the first 4 hours. Everyone who gets it pays, and one gets the job, often whoever calls first.

On your own website

A homeowner finds you on Google
Your website
  • You$0 for the call

Only you. No fee for the call, and nobody else is dialing them at the same moment.

A Thumbtack moderator wrote in 2024 that customers are limited to 4 pros in the first 4 hours; after that, they can reach more.

The lead math

What does each job really cost you?

Thumbtack doesn’t publish lead prices by trade, so put in what your account charges. The answer is what each paying job costs you in leads.

Every job you win costs $200 in leads.

Leads a month

Leads a year

Example numbers to start; change them to yours. A website doesn’t replace every lead overnight, but every call it brings is free and only yours.

The fine print

Free to join. Not free to use.

Two kinds of leads

Direct leads are charged as soon as they arrive. Opportunities are charged only if the customer replies to you.

Refunds for a few reasons

A wrong number, a duplicate, or a job that changed a lot can be refunded if you ask within 45 days, at Thumbtack’s discretion.

Losing the job isn’t one

A customer who hired someone else isn’t a reason for a refund.

Refunds stay on Thumbtack

By default a refund goes back to your Thumbtack balance, to spend on more leads.

Renting vs. owning

Leads you rent. A website you own.

Built to convert

Two taps from Google to your phone ringing.

Every site we build is set up to turn a search into a call. That’s the whole job of a contractor website, and it’s where most template and AI sites lose the customer.

The honest version

You don’t have to quit cold turkey.

Thumbtack still makes sense when

  • You’re just starting and need the phone to ring
  • You can answer within minutes, all day
  • Your lead price is low next to your average job

Your own site starts paying off when

  • People can find you by trade and town on Google
  • You want reviews that build your own name
  • You’re tired of paying for jobs you didn’t get
Thumbtack questions

Asked by contractors, answered straight.

How much does Thumbtack cost for contractors?
There’s no fee to join and no membership. You pay per lead, at a price you set for each service above minimums Thumbtack sets, within a weekly budget you choose.
Does Thumbtack send the same customer to other pros?
Customers can contact up to 4 pros in the first 4 hours, according to a Thumbtack moderator in 2024, and more after that.
Can I get a refund on a Thumbtack lead?
For specific reasons like a bad phone number, a duplicate or a job that changed significantly, if you ask within 45 days. A customer hiring someone else doesn’t qualify, and refunds go to your Thumbtack balance by default.
Is a website better than Thumbtack?
They do different jobs. Thumbtack rents you customers now. A website you own brings calls you don’t pay for, for years. Most contractors do best using leads short term while their own site and Google profile grow.
